13 Colony Star of David above the Eagle's Head on the One Dollar Biill

It s not clear what the hexagram meant at the time of the American Revolution, so to attribute some intended national symbolism to it based on today's meaning is mere speculation. The hexagram shape of the constellation of stars on the Great Seal may have simply been a rearrangement of the 13 stars on the first American flag.

- Holy Hexagram, GreatSeal.com

Curiously, the Great Seal of the United States appears to contain an image of a Star of David, consisting of 13 smaller American Stars symbolizing the 13 original colonies, above the eagle s head.

Defining 'Magen David'

Here are 3 separate and interesting definitions of the term 'Magen David'-

The Magen David (Shield of David) Definitions

Magen David
It is said to be "The Shield of David", or Magen David in Hebrew. The Semitic root M-G-N has the same meaning in Hebrew and Arabic. The symbol was adopted by Jews in Prague in the 17th century, with somesources quoting the 14th century instead. The earliest mention of theMagen is in a 12th century Karaite book by Judah Hadassi. Some sources mention it as a Cannanite symbol, but archeological digs in Palestine have failed to confirm neither a Hebrew nor a Canaanite origin. It was adoped by some American Jewish publications in 1873, and by the Zionist Congress of Basel.

The Magen David
(Shield of David), the six-pointed star made of two triangles, appeared according to Jewish tradition on the shield of King David. According to the same tradition the same symbols appeared also on King Solomon's ring and therefore it is also called the Seal of Solomon. This symbol was considered to have magical powers and as a defence from the evil spirits. Such symbol without any connection to Judaism was found in India. The symbol was also considered as magical by the Moslems (as Solomon Seal) and appeared as the symbol of Nigeria. It was also used by the Ethiopian monarchs who, according to their tradition, were the descendants of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheva, and was also known there as Solomon Seal. MAGEN DAWID
("David's shield") The hexagram formed by the combination of two equilateral triangles; used as the symbol of Judaism. It is placed upon synagogues, sacred vessels, and the like, and was adopted as a device by the American Jewish Publication Society in 1873, the Zionist Congress of Basel- hence by "Die Welt" (Vienna), the official organ of Zionism-and by other bodies. The Hebra Haddisha of the Jewish community of Johannesburg, South Africa, calls itself 'Hebra Haddisha zum Rothen Magen David,' following the designation of the 'red cross' societies.

The Star of David Forts in Vietnam

We heard an interesting story from a friend of ours who was in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War. He said if you flew over the demilitarized zone between area controlled by the two opposing forces, you would see outlines of these stars everywhere on the ground. The Americans experimented with various configurations that would enable them to efficiently build and hold an outpost with only a few men, and this design turned out to be superior to all others.

Imagine walls in the shape of this symbol, and defenders on the walls. An approaching enemy from any direction would be caught in a crossfire. If it appeared that one of the walls would be breached, the commander would withdraw the defending forces inside the inner hexagram and seal it off. He would wait for the triangular point of the star to fill with enemy troops and then blow it up.

So even in recent years, this Star of David, or Shield of David, protected American forces in Vietnam. Amazing.

Betsy Ross never made an American Flag for George Washington, it's a Fairy Tale

Here are three separate sources that reiterate the famous legend about Betsy Ross meeting with, and then convincing, George Washington to use five-pointed pentagrams rather than six-pointed hexagrams in the original 'Stars and Stripes' American flag. While this makes for a great story, it has been proven false numerous times by professional historians. Even so, many Americans today still think this story is historical fact, rather than a myth. Here are three versions of the Betsy Ross legend:

MYTH VERSION #1) Back in 1776, George Washington wanted the states to be represented on a new American flag by six-pointed stars resembling the Star of David. Betsy Ross, however, recommended a five-pointed star. The committee in charge of the final flag design thought Betsy's stars would be too difficult to make, but she proved them wrong. She won over the committee when she folded a piece of paper and, with a single snip of her scissors, produced the perfect five- pointed star we use today.

MYTH VERSION #2) In June of 1776, George Washington, who was a frequent visitor of Betsy Ross' shop in Philadelphia, came to Betsy with a congressional committee comprised of himself, Robert Morris, and Col. George Ross (a relative of Betsy's late husband). The committee appointed Betsy the task of sewing a flag based on a rough drawing by Col. Ross. She offered various suggestions for improvement, including making the flag more symmetrical and using five pointed stars instead of six pointed. They accepted her suggestions, and she made the first American flag. .

- The Betsy Ross Story, The First American Flag (Betsy Ross Flag), United-States-Flag.com

MYTH VERSION #3) Betsy and Washington thought the stars should be arranged in an orderly fashion, in straight lines or a circle. They decided there should be 13 stars to match the number of stripes.

Bestsy Ross: 'And five-pointed stars would look better than the six-pointed ones you have here'.
George Washington: 'But five-pointed stars are hard to make. And 13 would take too much time. We need the flag right away'.
Betsy Ross: 'If you will sir, let me show you how I can make a perfect five-pointed star. I can do it with a singel snip of my scissors'.
George Washington: 'Amazing!'

The three men were impressed with Betsy's ideas and skill.. they gave her the job of making the first American flag.
